€1m Investment in Music Education
City of Limerick VEC, in partnership with other key stakeholders, announced on 9th January 2013 that Limerick City Music Education Partnership (LCMEP) had been chosen by Music Generation to develop music education across Limerick City over the next three years and beyond.
Music Generation Limerick City will develop and co-ordinate a range of affordable, accessible, high quality programmes within the city targeted at tackling disadvantage and ensuring access for more than 10,000 children and young people. Programmes to be developed will include live music performances and showcase events, initiation of new choirs and youth ensembles, musician in residence programmes, pre-school programmes for children, access programmes in primary and post-primary schools and community based youth band initiatives.
Commenting on the announcement, Paul Patton, CEO, City of Limerick VEC, said: “This is a great achievement for Limerick City, especially as we approach City of Culture 2014. This initiative will enrich and regenerate the lives of children and their communities across the City”. Rosaleen Molloy, National Director, Music Generation, congratulated the Steering Committee on its successful application and said that “she looked forward to working in partnership with Music Generation Limerick City”.
Limerick City now joins other announced local Music Education Partnerships in Offaly, Westmeath, Carlow as well as currently established partnerships in Cork City, Laois, Louth, Mayo, Sligo and Wicklow. To date, the established partnerships have provided music tuition to over 5,000 children and provided employment opportunities for some 120 music tutors across the six counties.
Music Generation is Ireland’s national music education programme initiated by Music Network and funded by U2 and the Ireland Funds that provides access to subsidised high-quality music education for children and young people. Music Generation works closely with the Department of Education & Skills who have committed to continuing to develop and sustain the Music Education Partnerships with Exchequer funding in future years when the donations cease.
